An English-speaking sleep specialist on the French Riviera

Dr Loris-Alexandre Mazelin, sleep medicine physician, Éléa Santé

A French sleep physician, in English

Éléa Santé runs three sleep clinics in the south of France, in Montauroux, Nice and Draguignan. Dr Loris-Alexandre Mazelin, a French sleep medicine physician, consults in English at all three.

If you snore, if someone has seen you stop breathing at night, or if you wake up tired however long you sleep, sleep apnea is one of the first things to look for.

Whether you live on the Riviera, spend part of the year in a second home between Saint-Tropez, Cannes and Monaco, or are here for a few weeks, the assessment can be organised in English and around your stay.

The simplest way to reach us in English is by email: international@eleasante.com

Snoring, pauses, tiredness: when to think of sleep apnea

In sleep apnea, the airway narrows or closes again and again during sleep. Breathing slows or stops, the brain briefly rouses the body to restart it, and the night is broken without the sleeper being aware of it.

The first person to notice is often the one sleeping next to you. Loud snoring, night after night. A pause in breathing, then a gasp. Waking with a dry mouth or a headache. Feeling tired after a full night, or nodding off in front of the television, or at the wheel.

Regular snoring is never quite normal. It can be the first sign of sleep apnea, or lead to it over the years, which is why it is worth looking into early.

How the assessment works

International guidelines are clear on one point: to know whether you have sleep apnea, you need a sleep test.

A questionnaire can raise the suspicion; only a night of recording can confirm it.

  1. The consultation. English-speaking patients usually see Dr Mazelin directly, at whichever of our three clinics suits them. Your partner is welcome to join you: they have often heard what you cannot.

  2. The recording night. You sleep where you are staying: your home, your villa, your hotel. There is no night in hospital. Depending on the consultation, the recording is a respiratory polygraphy, for which you collect the device at one of our three clinics, or a polysomnography, with sensors fitted at the clinic before you go back for the night.

  3. The analysis. Your recording is read by our own team.

  4. The results. We go through them with you, in person or by video, and you receive a written report in English.

Living in France, or staying for a while

If you live in France and are covered by French health insurance, you follow the usual French care pathway, simply in English.

If you have a second home here, or are visiting, we offer an additional service: a shorter pathway, built around your dates. The results can be discussed by video once you have left, and the report sent, with your consent, to your usual doctor abroad.

Organised around you

  • A schedule fitted to your stay. Tell us your dates and we do our utmost to make everything happen within them.

  • A report written in English, for you and for your doctor at home.

  • Discretion. It is not a service we add: medical confidentiality is the rule. What concerns your health stays between you and the doctors who care for you.

For concierge services and personal assistants

If you are arranging a sleep assessment for a client, you can handle the practical side with us directly, by email: appointment dates, collecting and returning the device, the date of the results.

Write to international@eleasante.com with your client's dates of stay, where they will be staying and how best to reach them. We do our utmost to fit the consultation, the recording night and the results within that time, and we reply quickly with what we can offer.

Medical information is the one thing that stays with the patient. Results and reports go to them, or to their own doctor if they ask us to.

Reception of the Éléa Santé sleep clinic in Nice (Maison Dors by Éléa Santé)

French medicine is well regarded for the quality of its training.

But what really changes the care you receive is being able to speak freely with your doctor, in your own language. That is why I see English-speaking patients at all three of our clinics.
